An 8-acre fire and two “spot fires” of less than one acre each were still burning near Soldotna on Friday evening, according to a 7:30 p.m. update from the Alaska Division of Forestry.
Dubbed the Bruces Fire, the blaze is located near the Sterling Highway between Milepost 102 and 103. Central Emergency Services and the forestry division responded to the brush and timber fire, according to a 4:30 p.m. dispatch from the division.
On Friday evening, crews were starting to secure the fire’s edge, after air tankers dropped retardant to box in the fire. Crews completed a hose lay around the entirety of the fire’s perimeter, the division said, and aircraft responding to the fire were released. A dozer to help secure the fire’s perimeter is slated to be brought in tonight.
