The Kenai River Brown Bears, Junior A Hockey Team, holds an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Kevin Bell Arena as a benefit for the Homer Food Pantry. From 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Jan. 25 is a free public skate with the Kenai River Brown Bears at the Kevin Bell Arena. Admission to each event is a donation of two nonperishable food items or monetary meal donation. Rental skates are available for loan.

The North Pacific Fisheries Association holds its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Kachemak City Community Center. Dr. Megan Peterson makes a presentation, “Whale Depredation in Commercial Fisheries.” Any interested parties are welcome to attend.

The Kachemak Bay Birders hold a “leader’s choice” birding trip on Saturday. The trip will be to the Anchor River or the Spit depending on weather and other conditions. Meet at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center at noon to car pool. All trips are cosponsored by the Kachemak Bay Birders and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Michael Craig leads the trip. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. Bring binoculars and a scope if you have one.

George Hamm turns 75 this month. An open house for his birthday is all day Saturday at 3505 East End Road. Stop by to say hello, wish him well and enjoy cake and ice cream.

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies invites Alaskans to take part in the Wynn Nature Center 50-mile Challenge. The Kick-off for this challenge is at the 30th Annual Rotary Health Fair, held Saturday at Homer High School. The Challenge will run through June 7, 2014, with grand prizes awarded at the Wynn Nature Center season opening potluck on June 14. Snowshoe, ski, walk or run. Bring a friend or family member. The 140-acre Wynn Nature Center has miles of trails suited for all ages and abilities.
