Kachemak Bay Conservation Society is seeking volunteers to assist at the upcoming Earth Day celebration from noon-6 p.m. April 26 at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. The Kachemak Bay Birders meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center auditorium. Following the meeting there will be a presentation by Aaron Lang on the identification of shorebirds. Come and learn some ways to tell them apart and enjoy a preview of the birds that will start arriving in Homer in mid- April. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. The Homer Fish and Game Advisory Council holds an informal drop-in workshop on proposal writing from 5-7 p.m. today in the Homer Public Library Conference Room. The workshop is for members of the public interested in submitting proposals for the upcoming board cycle addressing the Kenai Peninsula or learning more about the process. The Friends of the Homer Public Library is sponsoring a commemorative event of the 1964 Earthquake at 6 p.m. March 27. They’re looking for people who would be willing to tell brief anecdotes of their experiences of the 1964 earthquake. The Kenai River Brown Bears, Junior A Hockey Team, holds an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Kevin Bell Arena as a benefit for the Homer Food Pantry. From 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Jan. 25 is a free public skate with the Kenai River Brown Bears at the Kevin Bell Arena. Admission to each event is a donation of two nonperishable food items or monetary meal donation. Rental skates are available for loan.

The North Pacific Fisheries Association holds its annual meeting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Kachemak City Community Center. Dr. Megan Peterson makes a presentation, “Whale Depredation in Commercial Fisheries.” Any interested parties are welcome to attend.

The Kachemak Bay Birders hold a “leader’s choice” birding trip on Saturday. The trip will be to the Anchor River or the Spit depending on weather and other conditions. Meet at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center at noon to car pool. All trips are cosponsored by the Kachemak Bay Birders and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Michael Craig leads the trip. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. Bring binoculars and a scope if you have one.
