Cross-country skiing: From assistant coach Alison O’Hara:

“The ski team went to Government Peak in Hatcher Pass for a two-day race this past weekend. Day No. 1 featured a 5 Kilometer skate followed by a 5K classic race on Day No. 2. GPRA has an exciting new race course which heads straight uphill for about 1K with a few short flat spots to catch your breath. Toward the top there are some technical spots where skilled skiers can use some strategy to navigate the course in hope of shaving a few seconds off their time.

“Luckily hills are what the Mariner’s do best and it showed. Homer put four skiers on the podium which made the team and coaches very happy. Senior Denver Waclawski had a fantastic classic race which pulled him up from 13th place on (the first day) to a 6th place overall finish. Denver has been working very hard this ski season so we were thrilled to see him rewarded for that!

“Also noteworthy is the Mariner Girls Varsity Team won the entire team classic race on (the second day). There aren’t any seniors on the girls team this year. In another year they will surely be formidable.

“The race was a Region 3 Mat-Su Invite with nine schools in attendance.”
