Alaska artists can apply
for Outside residencies
Starting Friday, Alaska artists and writers interested in two-month residencies in the Lower 48 can apply for the Rasmuson Foundation’s Artist Residency Program. Rasmuson Foundation launched the program in 2013, which supports eight-week residencies for Alaska artists at Lower 48 organizations and welcomes accomplished artists from Outside to Alaska organizations. The program’s goals are to support the creative growth of Alaska’s artists and arts organizations, expose Alaskans to new work and creative processes of Lower 48 artists, and introduce Lower 48 communities to unique Alaska perspectives through extended engagements with artists. Homer writer publishes
illustrated autobiography
Charlesbridge Publishing has released “Gabe,” an autobiography by Homer writer Shelley Gill of her life in the 1970s with a husky dog as she travels around the United States from Florida to Alaska. Illustrated by Marc Scheff, it’s both a coming-of-age story and a tribute to a beloved dog. The 64-page hardcover book is $12.95 and available at the Homer Bookstore.
Birdsall visits Art Shop Gallery
Longtime Alaska artist Byron Birdsall visits from 1-6 p.m. Saturday at the Art Shop Gallery. He will be featuring several new watercolor originals. Birdsall also can sign and personalize his prints and his book, “Byron Birdsall’s Alaska.”
Rhythm of the North is at HCOA, Pier One
Johnny B’s Rhythm of the North starts Friday shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Homer Council on the Arts. He will perform every Friday at 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 2. Admissions is $12 HCOA member and $15 general admission. Tickets area available at HCOA and the Homer Bookstore.
His show also continues at Pier One Theater. He performs 1 and 3 p.m. every other Tuesday. The multi-media extravaganza features his music coupled with videos of Alaska. For information and reservations, call 235-7333.
Schlegelmilch signs new book July 16
Homer writer Marianne Schlegelmilch holds a book signing for her new book, “Feather for Forever,” from 1-3 p.m. July 16 at the Homer Bookstore. This is the fifth and final book of her “feather series” of Alaska themed fiction. The release was scheduled to coincide with the ending of the book on summer solstice. The storyline in this book begins in Homer.
