In conjunction with the art exhibit, “Liberty and Justice (For All),” the Friends of the Homer Public Library holds several upcoming events. At 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Fireplace Reading Lounge at the Library is an open discussion, “Human Rights, Individual Responsibilities.” Join panelists as they consider issues such as the right to a democratic government balanced by our duties as citizens or the rights of free speech balanced by the hope of reasoned discourse and personal integrity. 

At 6 p.m. Jan. 21, seniors from the Homer High School Advanced Placement English class will look at “Liberty, Media and Justice: An Unsightly Triad?” They will give brief presentations of essays they wrote on the subjects of liberty, media and justice.

“Liberty and Justice (For All)” originally appeared as a special photo and text feature in the Spring 2012 issue of Alaska Quarterly Review. It was a tribute to Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, two photojournalists who were killed in 2011 while covering the civil war in Libya. In the feature, 68 photojournalists explored the universal themes of liberty and justice through images and personal narrative. The exhibit came out of that magazine feature and was shown in Alaska, North America and London. The Homer exhibit features 24 images selected by AQR editor Ron Spatz. The show inaugurates the return of the Homer Public Library as a venue for rotating exhibits of public art.
