Two hundred people marched in a snowstorm on Monday, Dec. 2 to protest the Cook Inlet Lease Sale 85A, hoping to send an unmistakable message to Gov. Tony Knowles. Lease Sale 85A included roughly 1.1 million acres onshore and offshore from Turnagain Arm to the lower Kenai Peninsula. Homer-area residents were especially concerned about the 190,000 acres on the Lower Peninsula. Almost the same acreage was removed from Lease Sale 78 several years prior when there was less natural gas interest.

30 years ago in the Homer News:

Organizers of the 1985 Renaissance Christmas Faire decided to expand it to an entire week, culminating in a two-day costumed extravaganza. During Renaissance week, high school students celebrated the period with a different event each day, including jousting, juggling, live chess and a chivalry contest. The Ashland, Ore., Shakespearean Festival performers attended as special guest artists.

50 years ago in the Homer News:

Mr. and Mrs. Bill DeCreeft loast their East Road home to a fire that the Homer Volunteer Fire Department responded to after Mrs. DeCreef discovered it in the wall near a stove pipe. Efforts to save the house failed, but firemen saved part of the family’s possessions on the first level.
