Sarah Vance’s lead grows in GOP primary after initial absentee ballot count

Homer resident and District 31 Alaska House of Representatives candidate Sarah Vance continues to lead the GOP primary race now that a preliminary count of absentee ballots has been made.

According to an updated count on Tuesday from the Alaska Division of Elections, Vance leads Anchor Point resident John Cox 1,214 to 1,120, a gap of 94 votes. Vance previously was leading by just a 30-vote margin at the end of the election night on Aug. 21.

This is Vance’s first run at the District 31 House seat, and Cox’s second time running. They both seek to unseat incumbent Rep. Paul Seaton. Whoever wins the Republican primary will face off against Seaton, who is running as a nonpartisan candidate in the Democratic Party, in the general election. The tally could still change slightly if more absentee ballots file in before the Division of Elections makes its final count on Saturday.
