Allen Sheldon

Allen Sheldon, 57 of Homer, died on Dec. 12, 2018, in his sleep at his home.

He was born Oct. 8, 1961 in Anchorage, Alaska, the son of Bill and Darlene Sheldon.

In 1965 the family moved to Colorado where Allen attended elementary school and he graduated from Fort Collins High School. He was active in 4-H, played baseball, football, wrestling and was a Member of Fort Collins DeMolay.

After graduation from high school, he and his brother took off to Alaska and the Sheldon Homestead. After a couple months, Allen decided he wanted to join the U.S. Navy. His home base was out of Jacksonville, Florida. He was assigned duty on the Saratoga, an aircraft carrier. He spent seven years in the Navy. After leaving the Navy he spent some time in the Lower 48 and had the desire to move back to Alaska.

Here in Alaska he was employed in the fishing industry in the summer and restaurant work in the winter. He volunteered some of his time at the American Legion Post 16, cooking on the grill, washing dishes, marching in parades and helping with July 4 carnivals.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Merne Kottman of Kansas; John and Alice Sheldon of Kansas; and his older brother, Kevin Sheldon of Homer.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Darlene Sheldon of Homer; sister Laura McLaughlin of Belleville, Illinois; sister Sandy Sheldon of North Bend Washington; sister-in-law Laura Cheney of Homer; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at the American Legion Hall – Mile 2.5 East End Road.

The family requests no flowers; memorial donations can be made to SPBHS Journey’s Fund or American Legion Post 16 (Beaver Bently Fund).
