Anchor Kings wrestle at Nikiski weekend tournament

The Anchor Kings Wrestling Club is a nonprofit organization committed to teaching the youth of Homer, Chapman, McNeil Canyon and other surrounding schools the skill of wrestling.

The club season starts in March and runs through the first week of May with weekly tournaments that the youth can participate in, wrestling against other children from all over Alaska. Most of the tournaments require the children to travel to whichever club is hosting that weekend’s event.

This past weekend the kids traveled to Nikiski for a tournament. They often will also travel to Anchorage, Big Lake, Palmer and Wasilla area for the chance to compete against others.

Anchor Kings will host a local tournament April 19 and 20 at the Homer High School. In 2024 there are more than 120 kids registered in Anchor Kings, who range in age from 5 through seniors in High School. The coaches all provide volunteer time to help the youth learn and excel in the sport as well as in life.

Parent coordinator Sommer Adcox said the wrestling group “had 78 wrestlers compete in the combined Greco and Freestyle tournament and they stacked up a total 54 Pins.”
