Area skiers qualify for Junior National, Arctic Winter Games

The Besh Cup series, used to select skiers for Junior Nationals and the Arctic Winter Games, concluded with races at Birch Hill in Fairbanks on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday was interval start freestyle races.

In the girls 5-kilometer Under 14 and 16 race, Miya Kam-Magruder won at 16 minutes, 27 seconds, while Soldotna High School’s Kara Veihdeffer was 18th in 21:29.

In the boys 5-kilometer Under 14 and 16 race, Jack Leveque won at 14:20. Kenai Central’s Chase Laker was fifth at 15:13, Homer’s Ethan Styvar was sixth at 15:15 and Soldotna’s Michael Davidson was 11th at 16:25.

In the Under 18 and older women’s 7.5-kilometer race, Olivia Soderstrom took first at 24:50. Soldotna’s Tania Boonstra was ninth in 28:32, while SoHi’s Ariana Cannava was 10th at 28:42.

In the Under 18 and older men’s 7.5-kilometer race, Thomas O’Harra won at 19:56, while Homer’s Jody Goodrich was 15th at 23:02 and Kenai Central’s Jack Laker was 16th in 23:14.

Sunday was classic mass start races.

In the girls 7.5-kilometer Under 14 and 16 race, Kam-Magruder won at 29:46, while Veihdeffer was 14th at 36:06.

In the boys 7.5-kilometer Under 14 and 16 race, Leveque won at 25:19, while Chase Laker was fourth at 26:37, Styvar was sixth at 26:50 and Davidson was 23rd at 33:55.

In the women’s 10-kilometer Under 18 and older race, Marit Flora won at 38:59, while Boonstra was seventh at 41:38 and Cannava was 12th at 43:17.

In the men’s 10-kilometer Under 18 and older race, O’Harra won at 31:57. Goodrich was 16th at 36:20, and Jack Laker was 25th at 38:36.

In the final points rankings, both Boonstra and Cannava qualified for Junior Nationals, though Boonstra had indicated earlier in the season she was leaning toward doing Arctic Winter Games instead.

On the boys side, Styvar qualified for Junior Nationals, while Goodrich qualified for Arctic Winter Games.
