Saturday: Chugiak softball tops SoHi in Bash on the Bay title game

The Chugiak softball team won the Bash on the Bay softball tournament for the third year in a row Saturday in Homer.

Saturday’s bracket was set up by round-robin play Thursday and Friday. Chugiak was 4-0, Soldotna was 3-1, Homer was 2-2, Kenai was 1-3 and West was 0-4.

Chugiak defeated Soldotna 9-0 in the championship game, with the Stars recording three hits.

The Mustangs had reached the championship game by topping Soldotna 4-2 in the semifinals.

Soldotna had reached the semis by defeating Kenai 12-6.

For SoHi, Tatum Cooper was 2 for 2 with two runs, Isabelle Cruz was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Bella Gares was 2 for 3, Kiara Forkner was 2 for 3 with two runs, Bailey Conner was 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBIs, and Kacey Cunningham was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

For Kenai, Caitlyn Crapps had two runs, and Kyana Griskevich was 2 for 2 with two runs.

Chugiak reached the semis by topping West 12-0. West had defeated Homer 10-7 to reach that game.

For Homer, Ariana Davis had two runs and two RBIs, Charlotte Fraley had two RBIs, and Becca Trowbridge was 2 for 2.

In the playback bracket, Homer ended Kenai’s tourney with a 7-6 victory.

For Homer, Davis had two runs, Taylor Fraley had three runs, Trowbridge had two RBIs, and Emily Owens was 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

For Kenai, Crapps had two runs and Kailey Stynsberg had two RBIs.

Homer continued to advance in the playback bracket by topping West 10-8.

For Homer, Davis was 3 for 3 with four RBIs, Julie Guess was 2 for 2 with two runs, Alaiyah Brost was 2 for 2 with two runs and Natalie Hinsberger was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Soldotna then defeated Homer 11-3 to earn a spot in the championship with Chugiak.

For SoHi, Alyssa McDonald had two runs, Cruz was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, Gares was 3 for 3, Forkner had two RBIs, and Conner was 2 for 2.

For Homer, Davis had two RBIs.

The Awesome Arm award at the tourney went to Chugiak’s Yanessa Rodriguez for the second time. The Speediest Runner was Homer’s Davis, while the Big Hitter was Chugiak’s Isabel Sjostrand.

Unanimous choices for the all-tourney team were Davis, SoHi’s Cooper and West’s Olivia Byrd.

Also on the team were West’s Ary Sparks, Olivia Chichenoff and Sofie Bernal, Chugiak’s Rodriguez and Shelby Strange, Soldotna’s McDonald, Kenai’s Stynsberg, and Homer’s Trowbridge and Owens.

After the tourney, SoHi is 10-7 overall, Homer is 8-14-2 overall and Kenai is 2-10 overall.
