Upcoming events

Volleyball: The volleyball team will compete this weekend in the Shana Pritchard Tournament in Nikiski, starting at 2:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Cross-country: The Homer cross-country team will compete in the Bartlett Preview starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Football: The Mariners will face off against Monroe High School at 2 p.m. Saturday at Homer High School.

Swim and Dive: The Homer swim and dive team will host the Swim Quad at 5 p.m. Friday at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center.

Volleyball

Homer’s varsity volleyball team took third place in last weekend’s Homer Jamboree, a round-robin style tournament held at the start of each season at Homer High School.

Nikiski’s team came out on top, defeating Kenai Central High School 25-18, 25-15 in the final games. Homer defeated Seward for third place 25-18, 14-25 and 15-10 in their final games. The Lady Mariners lost their first games in the round-robin play to Kenai, 21-17 and 21-15, and lost their second set of games 21-14 and 21-16 to Nikiski.

Football

Homer high’s football team suffered a loss in the first home game of the season, ending their battle against Kenai Central High School 58-6.

Several Homer players ended up icing injuries on the bench by the end of the nonconference game. The team now stands at 0-2 for the season.

The Kardinals improved to 1-1 overall. They led the Mariners 30-0 after the first quarter, 44-6 at halftime.

Homer’s one touchdown was scored by sophomore Cade Hrenchir, who caught a pass from junior quarterback Anthony Kalugin for a 53 yard gain.

Kenai rushed for 458 yards, while holding Homer to negative 4 yards.

Cross-country

The Homer cross-country team continued the start to its season by competing in the highly populated Tsalteshi Invitational held last weekend.

The event consists of two 5 kilometer races — one for varsity runners and one open race — for both boys and girls, through the winding trail system on the outskirts of Soldotna. The Homer girls team placed 13 overall out of 15 teams, while the boys also came in at 13 out of 17 teams.
