Middle school basketball teams win borough championships

Homer Middle School’s boys and girls teams swept the borough championships for the first time in Husky history over the Dec. 17 weekend in Seward.

The win for the girls came after a five or six year wait — the last time they picked up a borough championship was when 2016 Homer High School graduate Kayla Stafford was on the team, said HMS girls basketball head coach Zach Kudla. The school does not know if the boys have ever won a borough championship.

Both teams played two games, winning both the semifinal and championship rounds. The girls competed against Skyview eighth grade in the semifinals and won 35-21, while the boys beat Kenai in the semifinals 58-48, Kudla said.

The girls basketball team faced Nikiski in the championship game, winning by a narrow margin of 25-22. The boys defeated Skyview eighth grade 56-31.
