Coast Guard rescues man from downed aircraft near Haines

The Coast Guard on Sunday rescued a man in a downed aircraft near Haines. Upon rescue, he was reported in “good condition,” according to an Aug. 25 press release.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the Coast Guard Arctic District Command Center in Juneau received a signal transmitting in the Chilkat mountains from the aircraft’s emergency locator transmitter. The location was about 35 miles south of Haines.

Haines Airport staff reported that the aircraft — a two-seat single-engine airplane — had departed earlier that morning but not returned.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka was dispatched to search for the plane, which they located, overturned, at 10:25 a.m. near the Endicott River.

The crew successfully landed near the plane and safely transferred the pilot to the helicopter with no reported injuries. The pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was transported back to Juneau by the aircrew.
