The Kachemak Bay Birders’ next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters Visitor Center. A short business meeting will be followed by a presentation by Kenai National Wildlife Refuge biologist Todd Eskelin: “Anna’s Hummingbirds — Where are they coming from and where are they going?”. Todd’s professional interest in birds began at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Since then, he worked as the bander-in-charge at the fledgling Alaska Bird Observatory, several temporary stints with the USFWS training banders and setting up and operating stations for Alaska Peninsula, Becharof NWR and Izembek NWR. He has been at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge since 2001 and banding hummingbirds here since 2018. All our events are cosponsored by the AMNWR. KBRC is participating in National Recovery Month, held every September, to promote and support the nation’s strong and proud recovery community and the dedication of all who support recovery. Upcoming events are: Craft Night & Potluck with SVT, Sept. 26, 5:30-8 p.m. at the KBRC Living Room; and Quarterly Recovery Speaker Series, Sept. 30, 5:30-7 p.m. at the KBRC Living Room. Kachemak Bay Recovery Connection’s Living Room is located at 111 West Pioneer Avenue.

Northern Light Al-Anon Family Group meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays at The Living Room, Kachemak Bay Recovery Connection, 111 W. Pioneer Ave. (across the street from The Porcupine Theater).

Homer Area Child Find Screenings — The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Child Find Program and Sprout Infant Learning Program will be offering free screenings for children birth to 5 years old (not yet in kindergarten). We will screen your child’s motor skills, speech, early learning concepts, vision and hearing. Screenings will take place by appointment only. The Saturday Lunch Program is having a fundraiser at the Ninilchik Community Center, located on Kingsley Road, on Oct. 4 from 5-7 p.m. Proceeds go to supplement weekend food needs. Dinner with a suggested price of $10 includes BBQ pork sliders, slaw, chips and a drink. Pie by the slice for $5. There will be a silent and live auction too! Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge

The AMNWR Visitor Center has new hours. We are open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.; closed on Sunday and Monday. Reach staff with questions at 907-302-4810.

Marine Mammals Osteology Lab — Become a bone detective as you explore what skeletons can tell us about the marine mammals of Alaska on Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. Drop in at any time. Find Your Wild Homer Spit Stroll —Walk, roll or paddle! Previously known as Walk for the Wild, Find Your Wild lets you pick your favorite way to support AMNWR. On Oct. 4, meet at Mariner Park and come walk the Spit (around 5k) from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and learn about the refuge. National wildlife refuges conserve habitat for endangered species, keep carbon out of the atmosphere, and allow us to get out in nature and find community with our fellow nature fan. Let’s do our part to protect these beautiful places and have some fun at the same time! Leashed and well-behaved furry friends welcome — they may earn a BARK Ranger badge. Pratt Museum

New Admission Rate at the Museum — The Pratt Museum has partnered with Museums For All! to provide a new admission rate of $5 for individuals with SNAP EBT cards. Homer Council on the Arts

Fabricated: Fiber Arts Showcase featuring 20 Southern Kenai Peninsula artists with a variety of techniques from quilting and macrame wall hangings to wearables and 3D felted sculptures is on display through Sept. 29 in the HCOA Gallery! Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 1-5 p.m.

Gouache Painting Workshop with Oceana Wills — After choosing an animal subject to paint on a 5×7 clayboard panel, participants will learn techniques to bring out texture details such as fur, feathers and scales on the panel surface. Call for Art: Fun with 5x6x7 — It’s time again for HCOA’s annual 5X7 show. Started in 2018, the Fun with 5×7 show is about challenging artists to experiment or try something new. Ethan Lauesen Exhibit, Residency — Fairbanks-based printmaker Ethan Kayaaní Lauesen exhibits and is in residence at Bunnell Street Arts Center during the month of October. Their exhibit opens on First Friday, Oct. 3 from 5-7 p.m., with an artist talk at 6 p.m.

Appointments for this year’s low-cost blood tests will become available on Oct. 1. Silver Lining Café — If you are in the Homer area, come have lunch! Dine-in lunch includes soup, salad, entrée, dessert and beverage with table service. Community Exercise Classes for Seniors — “Strong Seniors” with Evelyn: Combination of slow-motion weightlifting and stretching class, Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants must have a physician authorization form turned in before starting the class. Forms are available in the HSC administration office at 3935 Svedlund. Cost is $5 per class for HSC members and $7 for nonmembers.

Become a Member of Homer Senior Citizens, Inc. — There are several levels of membership to choose from. As a member, you will receive discounts on exercise classes, receive our monthly members’ newsletter so you can see what’s been happening and what’s coming up for members to participate in, and more.
