There’s something special about holiday shopping in Homer – a kind of warmth you can’t find in big-box aisles or scrolling through an online cart.
It’s in the scent of clay and paint from a studio workshop, the laughter shared over coffee between friends, and the moment you realize the perfect gift was made just a few blocks away.
This season, the Homer Council on the Arts (HCOA) is inviting residents to rediscover that joy through hands-on workshops and local maker events that celebrate the creative heartbeat of the community.
Gifts made with love
For those looking to create something heartfelt, HCOA’s November workshops offer a blend of creativity and connection.
On Friday, Nov. 14, local artist Sharlene Cline will lead a Chinese Brush Painting session where participants learn traditional techniques to craft Japanese Camellia Holiday Cards. All skill levels are welcome, and materials are included.
Then, on Saturday, Nov. 22, join Xochitl in the HCOA studio for a Ceramic Cookie Cutter Ornament workshop – a fun, family-friendly way to shape and glaze your own holiday keepsakes. Participants can make two to five ornaments in multiple designs, creating something that feels personal and full of seasonal charm.
2025 Nutcracker Faire: Where creativity and community meet
The holiday spirit reaches its peak in December with the 2025 Nutcracker Faire, returning to Homer High School on Dec. 6 and 7.
The two-day event has become a cornerstone of the community calendar, featuring live music, local eats, and booths brimming with handcrafted art, jewelry, clothing, soaps, and more – all made by Kenai Peninsula artisans.
And of course, no Homer holiday season is complete without the Nutcracker Ballet. Tickets are available now at homernutcrackerproductions.com/tickets.
Watch for future installments of our Shop Local series, featuring more ways to support Homer’s small businesses and celebrate the community spirit that keeps the Bay’s brightest lights glowing through the longest nights.
