Clarion, KDLL to host candidate forum series

The live, open-to-the-public candidate forums will take place ahead of the Oct. 7 municipal election.

Update: The dates for Soldotna and Sterling Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly seats have changed. The Soldotna forum will take place Sept. 10. The Sterling/Funny River forum will take place Aug. 28.

The Peninsula Clarion and KDLL 91.9 FM are for the fourth year hosting a series of live, open-to-the-public candidate forums ahead of the local municipal election, slated for Oct. 7.

The forums, which are being held in partnership with the Central Kenai Peninsula League of Women Voters, KBBI AM 890, Homer News, The Seward Folly and KSRM 920 AM/92.5 FM, will take place between Aug. 21 and Sept. 29 at community libraries around the Kenai Peninsula. All forums will run from 6 to 7 p.m, with the sole exception of the Sept. 29 forum which runs from 5 to 6 p.m.

Forums will kick off Thursday, Aug. 21, with Teresa Mullican and Joan Corr, two of the three candidates for the Kalifornsky seat on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly. The third candidate, Scott Griebel, said he was unable to attend.

After the series kicks off this week, another forum, with candidates for the assembly’s Sterling and Funny River seat, will be held in Soldotna on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Candidates for Kenai mayor and city council will be part of a forum at the Kenai Community Library on Sept. 4.

On Sept. 10, a forum will be held in Soldotna with candidates for the assembly’s Soldotna seat, before a forum in Seward on Sept. 11 with candidates for Seward mayor.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board of Education will be the topic of two forums. The first will be on Sept. 17 in Soldotna with candidates for the school board’s Kalifornsky seat. The second will be Sept. 18 in Homer with candidates for the school board’s south and east peninsula seats.

On Sept. 24, a forum with candidates for Homer City Council will be held in Homer.

Candidates for the assembly’s central and Nikiski seats will be the subject of a forum in Sept. 25.

The final forum will be held Sept. 29 in Seward with candidates for Seward City Council.

Election day is Oct. 7.

Forums will be moderated by KDLL senior reporter Ashlyn O’Hara, KBBI reporter Simon Lopez, Homer News reporter Chloe Pleznac and Clarion senior news reporter Jake Dye. Questions asked during the forums will come from KDLL, KBBI, KSRM, the Clarion, Homer News and Seward Folly, in addition to questions submitted by members of the public in advance at info@kdll.org.

Each forum will also be livestreamed on the “Peninsula Clarion” Facebook page and broadcast live on the radio at KDLL 91.9 FM, KBBI 890 AM, KSRM 920 AM or KSRM 92.5 FM.
