Funny River wildfire now 60-percent contained

With the Funny River fire now 60-percent contained, firefighting and support crews continue to be downsized. The fire size is now calculated to be 193,597 acres. Fire crews are being demobilized and released to other assignments in Alaska and the lower 48 states.

Isolated smoke columns have been seen within the fire perimeter in pockets of unburned trees. On Tuesday night, a small 50-foot-by-50-foot fire burned in trees within the perimeter. Firefighters put out that fire with air support.

The weather forecast calls for light winds out of the southwest. The weekend weather forecast calls for a chance of rain Saturday through Monday, with highs in the high 50s and lows in the low 40s.

Fire prevention experts will be at the Kenai River Festival this weekend, Friday-Sunday, at Centennial Park, Soldotna, to answer questions about making homes “fire wise” and creating defensible space. “After the fire” workshops also will be held 10:30 a.m.-noon today at the Funny River Community Center, 6:30-8 p.m. today at the Tustumena School, and 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Sterling Community Center.
