Update: Rainfall causes road damage on Sterling Highway, Whiskey Gulch Road

Whiskey Gulch Road and the Whiskey Gulch beach access are closed through the weekend due to storm damage.

Heavy rainfall has caused a washout on the northbound shoulder of the Sterling Highway at Mile 157, near the intersection with Old Sterling Highway between Homer and Anchor Point.

The Alaska Department of Transportation announced Thursday morning on Facebook that the washout has begun to undercut the roadway. Photos show the washed-out area marked by cones. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution in that area.

DOT Central Region Admin Operations Manager Justin Shelby confirmed at about 1 p.m. that maintenance crews were en route and that the repairs should be completed by the end of the day.

DOT also announced about 4 p.m. on Facebook that Whiskey Gulch Road and beach access are closed through this weekend due to storm damage. Per the post, crews will inspect conditions “once the storm passes next week.” Community members are advised to plan accordingly and stay safe.

Reports can be submitted through the Alaska 511 app or by calling Alaska DOT Kenai Peninsula District Maintenance and Operations at 907-262-2199.
