Winter carnival celebrates love for Homer

The annual parade will be held Saturday, Feb. 14 at noon on Pioneer Avenue.

It’s that time of year again, folks — the annual Winter Carnival Celebration, sponsored by the Homer Chamber of Commerce, returns next weekend.

The 72nd Winter Carnival parade will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, and this year follows the theme, “Snow Much Love,” to celebrate the community’s love for Homer during Valentine’s Day weekend.

“From snowy fun to community spirit, it’s the perfect time to come together and embrace everything that makes our town special,” the chamber website says.

Chamber executive director Brad Anderson said via email Monday that organizers are looking forward to having the parade on Valentine’s Day, “which should add some extra fun to the day.”

“We’re already seeing some creative ideas with the early parade entries,” he wrote. “We always look forward to the Krewe of Gambrinus entry with their colorful musical performers and dancers bringing a taste of Mardi Gras to Homer.”

The parade will commence at noon from the Homer High School parking lot and travel down Pioneer Avenue. Parade participants should arrive at Homer High School by 11 a.m. on Feb. 14. A judging station will be posted at Bay Realty, with Darrel Oliver serving as parade emcee.

The chamber is accepting participation applications through Monday, Feb. 9. All are welcome to be in the parade. Floats are not mandatory; walking entries, bikes, cars and more are also invited.

To sign up to participate in the float, find the application on the Homer Chamber of Commerce website under Events. Participants may also download the application form and email it to chamber Events Coordinator Lindsay Trieweiler at events@homeralaska.org. Applications are due no later than Monday, Feb. 9, so chamber staff can determine the parade line-up.

The chamber is also seeking volunteers to help with traffic during the parade; Homer High School students are welcome to sign up to help out and earn volunteer hours. Email events@homeralaska.org to sign up to volunteer.
