Letters to the Editor

Grateful for scholarship

As a recipient of the Beluga Tail Non-Fiction Writing Scholarship, I would like to personally and publicly thank the Tin Roof Fund at the Homer Foundation for providing the funds for this award, and many others, and for continuously supporting students in their education.

The work done by the Tin Roof Fund truly makes a difference in the lives of students, and I am extremely grateful for their support.

Sincerely,

Eleanor Sweeney

Thanks to Rotary for education help

I would like to publicly thank Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club for their generous support of my education at Simpson University. Kachemak Bay Rotary has directly influenced me in many ways throughout my high school years, like providing me with an awesome opportunity at Rotary Youth Leadership Awards weekend and supporting exchange students in their adventure to Alaska, such as my Spanish sister Claudia.

This community is so blessed by their hands-on support of youth. Thank you.

The Alaska Mantra

I am entitled to an oversize PFD.

Do not tax me.

Slash government spending but don’t cut any services important to me.

I don’t care if the government shuts down as long as I can go fishing.

This is irresponsible. It is absurd. We need some adults in the room to develop a fiscal plan that balances revenue with expenses for essential government services and a reasonable Alaska Permanent Fund dividend. We must honor the 5% of market value withdrawal limit from the permanent fund to ensure its longevity.

Scholarships appreciated

Thank you Homer Foundation, Homer Community Science Scholarship and Nikki Geragotelis (Fry) Memorial Scholarship donors and committees for graciously awarding me the Homer Community Science Scholarship and Nikki Geragotelis (Fry) Memorial Scholarship.

These awards will help me pursue a degree in biology while I also focus on pre-medicine at Central Washington University. I am so lucky to live in such a kind and giving community. Thank you again.

Thankful for medical help

We wish to express our deep appreciation to the staff at Homer Medical, especially Dr. Roberts, Ed Gonzales and Rebecca Plymire, the nursing staff and doctors at South Peninsula Hospital, Home Health, especially Matt and Jennifer, and to Hospice of Homer and their volunteers.

The professionalism, kindness and generosity of all made it possible and bearable to care for Don (husband, father, and brother) at home his last few weeks. You have our heartfelt thanks.
