Upcoming events

Wrestling: The wrestling team will compete this weekend in the Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Wasilla Sports Complex.

Hockey: Homer hosts the End of the Road Shootout this weekend at the Kevin Bell Arena. The Mariners play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The other teams in the tournament are Soldotna, East Anchorage High School and Houston.

Volleyball: The Homer volleyball team heads to the state championships this weekend, starting Thursday, at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.

In review

Wrestling:

Homer wrestlers took second place as a team this past weekend at the Anchorage Christian Schools Denali Auto Glass Invite on Saturday with 162 points. Glennallen took first place with 197.5 points.

Mose Hayes won first place in the 152-pound weight class. Anthony Kalugin at 189 and Alex Hicks at 285 both took second place in their events, Russell Nyvall (125) and Ryan Hicks (215) placed fourth in theirs, Austin Cline (119) was fifth and Afony Reutov finished sixth.

Hockey:

The Homer hockey team got a strong start to its season with a successful three-game streak on the road this past weekend.

Starting on Thursday, the Mariners defeated Delta Junction 17-1 in North Pole. Goals were contributed by Toby Nevak, Isaiah Nevak, Kazden Stineff, Tyler Gilliland, Alden Ross, Matfey Reutov, Phin Weston, Karl Wickstrom and Ethan Pitzman.

The Mariners continued their weekend of high-scoring victories be beating Hutchison 14-0 in Houston at the Patty Center in Fairbanks. Homer got out to a 4-0 lead in the first period, then scored seven times in the second frame to take an 11-0 lead. In the end, Homer out shot Hutchison 60-5. Pitzman, Weston and Ross each ended the night with a hat trick. Stineff, Casey Otis, Austin Shafford and Owen Pitzman also contributed goals.

Homer rolled over Monroe Catholic on Saturday 17-0, also at the Patty Center. Otis and Gilliland each had a hat trick in that game. Pitzman, Shafford, Reutov, Weston, Isaiah Nevak, Rhodes Turner and Jett Allen also had goals on Saturday. The goal was split during this game by Keegan Strong and Vlase Polushkin.
