Students get inside tips on firefighting

Homer Volunteer firefighters Elaine Grabowski, Chris Cushman and Dan Miotke, pictured, visit with morning and afternoon preschool classes at Paul Banks Elementary School. They displayed the layers of gear firefighters wear, answered questions about their firehouse dog and fire pole, and showed the students the tools on their bright green engine. Grabowski, Cushman and Miotke also helped the youngsters perfect their stop-drop-and-roll technique and answered such important questions a “Do firefighters like icing on their cakes?” “Actually, firefighters eat a lot,” said Grabowski. For 30 years, the Homer Volunteer Fire Department has been partnering with Paul Banks Elementary School to teach and encourage fire safety.
