Point of View: University of Alaska Anchorage: A foundation for success

As a proud alumna of the University of Alaska Anchorage, I often reflect on how my education has shaped the trajectory of my career and the opportunities I’ve been fortunate to pursue. With a Bachelor of Arts in English-Creative Writing, UAA provided me with more than just a degree. It gave me the tools to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to an ever-changing world.

My journey has been anything but linear. From managing statewide operations for a successful video rental franchise, writing grants for Alaska nonprofits, serving as chief of staff in the Alaska State Legislature, and now as the President and Partner of an advertising agency, each step has been built on the foundation of skills I honed at UAA. The ability to craft compelling narratives, analyze complex issues, and connect with diverse audiences has been invaluable in every role I’ve held.

During my time in public policy and politics, I saw first hand the importance of clear communication and strategic thinking. Whether it was carrying the state’s Capital Budget, coordinating federal infrastructure funding, or advising on legislative priorities, my UAA education was always at the core of my work. The lessons I learned in creative writing — how to tell a story, how to engage an audience — translated seamlessly into speechwriting, public relations, and policy development.

Now, as the co-owner of Brilliant Media Strategies, I draw on those same skills to help businesses and organizations tell their stories. Whether it’s crafting a brand message or developing a strategic communications plan, the ability to think creatively and write persuasively remains at the heart of what I do.

But UAA’s impact on my life extends beyond academics. It’s where I built lifelong connections, developed a deep appreciation for Alaska, and learned the value of giving back. Today, as a member of the UAA Alumni Association Board, I’m proud to support the next generation of Seawolves as they embark on their own journeys.

UAA is more than a university — it’s a cornerstone of our community. It equips students, whether straight out of high school or seeking a degree mid-career, with the skills and confidence to succeed, no matter where their paths may lead. For me, it was the launchpad for a career that has spanned industries and sectors, and I am forever grateful for the education and experiences it provided.

As we look to the future, it’s vital to recognize the role UAA plays in shaping Alaska’s leaders, innovators, and storytellers. I encourage my fellow alumni to share their stories and celebrate the impact this institution has had on their lives. Together, we can ensure that UAA continues to be a beacon of opportunity for generations to come.
