Cheers — and jeers — spice up softball competition

Cheers of encouragement and taunting can be heard coming from the Jack Gist Park softball fields every evening, Monday-Thursday, while Homer Softball Association teams compete in friendly rival games.

Scheduled games start at 6:30 and 8 p.m. and offer fun competition for both skilled and amateur athletes.

Last week the Growlers maintained their undefeated 8-0 run, with Beluga Lake Lodge close behind with 8-1 win-to-loss ratio. On June 19, Beluga Lake Lodge displayed their dominance with a 20-1 win against Alibi. That was followed by Down East Saloon’s upsetting 24-14 win against the team co-sponsored by Cups and Kharacters.

A schedule of the games along with weekly updates on team scores and standings can be found on the 2014 Homer Softball Association Facebook page.

Standings as of June 19:

1. Growlers: 8, 0

2. Beluga Lake Lodge: 8, 1;

3. SBS: 6, 2;
