Cross-country ski travels to the Lynx Loppett Ski Race at Kincaid Park on Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec. 10.

Hockey plays at home against Chugiak on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 10, at noon.

Wrestling competes at conference championships at ACS on Friday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m.

Cross-country skiing

The Mariner cross-country ski team hosted the End of the Road Challenge on Saturday, Dec. 3 on Ohlson Mountain. For boys varsity teams, Soldotna High School finished first, Homer came in second and Kenai finished third. Kenai’s girls varsity took first place and Soldotna took second. The Homer girls team did not place. For the girls varsity team, Autumn Daigle placed fourth with a total time of 22:13.1 and was the only Homer varsity girl to finish the race. Jacob Davis came in fourth with a total time of 16:58.3, Caleb Rauch followed in fifth place with a total time of 17:04.5, Tadhg Scholzt came in eighth with a total time of 18:25.1 and Hoxie Parks came in ninth with a total time of 18:34.5.

Wrestling

The Homer Mariners enjoyed a successful weekend of wrestling in Kodiak, dominating a dual over the Bears on Friday and scoring a team victory in the Robin Hervey tournament Saturday.

Friday evening, the Mariners scored a 68-0 dual win over Kodiak, then won the Hervey tournament with 194 points, besting the Bears haul of 102 points. Seward took third place with 54.5 points.

Among the weekend highlights, Mose Hayes won the 132-pound crown Friday with an 8-4 decision over Kodiak’s Russel Dela Cruz, then beat Dela Cruz again Saturday with a 7-6 decision at 138 pounds. Taylor Finn, 220, earned a third place finish in his first tournament of his career.

Also, Jared Brant bumped up a weight class and defeated two successful Kodiak wrestlers in Eli Kniaziowski and Josh Nummer. On Friday, Brant pinned Kniaziowski in the second period, then defeated Nummer on Saturday with a 9-7 decision.

At 106 pounds, Homer’s Wayne Newman won both days with a pin and a 5-0 decision over Bryan Gonzalez of Kodiak.

Also picking up double victories for Homer over the two days were Seth Inama, Luciano Fasulo, Chris Cudaback, Timmy Woo, Tristen Cook, Levi King, Kyle Wells and Jadin Mann.

Mariner girls Alex Moseley and Mina Cavasos placed second and third, respectively, in the 120-pound weight class. Heather Harrington placed second at 220.

The Mariners go to the conference championships the weekend of Dec. 10 where the team looks to repeat as conference championship, said head coach Chris Perk. Luciano Fasulo, 126, ends the regular season 38-0.

Nikolaevsk School

Volleyball

Nikolaevsk’s Mixed Six Volleyball team won the Denali Conference Championship, which was hosted by Nikolaevsk School, earning one of two berths to state. The state tournament begins Thursday, Dec. 8. Kodiak Emerging Small Schools placed second and Fort Yukon placed third. Zachary Trail, Vera Fefelov, Nikit Fefelov and Kalenik Molodih of Nikolaevsk were named on the All Tournament Team. Vera was also named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Vera, Kristin Klaich, Elizabeth Fefelov, Chelesea Johnson and Markiana Yakunin of Nikolavesk were named to the All-Academic Team.
