Homer got its first traffic lights, but not a full-fledged, red, yellow and green stack. Flashing red lights went up at the intersection of Lake Street and Pioneer Avenue. It reinforces the all-way stop signs at the corner. Homer Mayor Jack Cushing said he doesn’t think the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has immediate plans for a full traffic signal.

“The indications were that that was 10, 20 or 30 years away,” Cushing said.

City Manager Phil Shealy fired Port and Harbor Director Tom Butowicz just two weeks after the director had been on the job. Homer News editor Shelley Gill tried to get a copy of Butowicz’s resume, but Shealy refused, saying it was a personnel matter. A 1982 Alaska Supreme Court ruling said that for positions of “substantial discretionary authority,” resumes should be released. Homer News attorney John McKay said a port director is such a position. The paper sued to get the resume.
