The arrival of the holiday season also means it’s time to begin holiday shopping — and what better time to support Homer’s local businesses?
Small businesses are the backbone of Alaska’s economy, as Homer Mayor Rachel Lord pointed out in a recent proclamation, and Homer boasts a diverse, entrepreneurial economy that balances numerous industries including tourism, agriculture, commercial fishing, the arts and more. Shopping locally — an effort supported in the slower off-season through coordinated events like the Homer Chamber of Commerce’s Shop Local Bingo or nationally recognized days like Small Business Saturday — helps sustain Homer’s economic ecosystem and lets our Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea thrive year-round.
Begun in 2023, the “Best of Homer” joins this effort to support local businesses and recognize their valued contributions to the greater community. Check out the results of this third annual “Best of Homer” feature.
Didn’t get a chance to participate this year? No worries! “Best of Homer” will return next year, providing another chance for you to nominate your local favorites for 2026.
This feature was printed in the Dec. 4 edition of the Homer News.
