Pier One performance of ‘Anne of Green Gables’ to spotlight theater skills developed in local youth camp

Pier One Theatre opens the youth theater production of “Anne of Green Gables” on Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Pier One Theatre on the Spit.

Adapted from the novel by L.M. Montgomery, the play’s cast is made up of Homer youth who participated in the most recent Pier One summer camp to develop theater skills.

The performance is directed by Kathleen Gustafson also lead instructor for the Production and Theater Skills camp, for youth age 11 to 17.

This camp was designed to offer youth participation in a fully staged theatrical production process from auditions to final curtain, according to the Pier One website. This year 17 students participated in the camp, which started on July 3. Other skills explored in the camp included dialogue study, improvisation games, costuming and script writing.

Earlier 2023 summer camps offered in June included Theater Games for youth 5 to 7 and Stories on the Stage for youth 8 to 10. Both of these were also instructed by Gustafson and provided opportunities for Homer youth to explore the space and creativity of theater through movement, voice and collaboration, the website explains.

Sarah Brewer, a local teacher and actor, provided one additional camp in June for older students, ‘Cosmic Hamlets: Shakescenes,’ particularly structured to delve into the works of Shakespeare.

The Pier One website states that students in this camp participated in collaboration with “Shakescene,” to rehearse, costume and film a scene from a Shakespeare play. The film is pieced together with scenes contributed by other youth camps and shown during the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival with the Robinson Shakespeare Company at the University of Notre Dame.

“Anne of Green Gables” will run one weekend only, Aug. 11-13 at Pier One Theatre on the Spit. Evening shows start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and matinees start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets can be purchased on the Pier One website at www.pieronetheatre.org or at the door.
