Youth vendors sell at farmers market

The Homer Farmers Market hosted the final Kids’ Vending Day of the season on Wednesday.

Young entrepreneurs sold a variety of wares at the final Kids’ Vending Day of the season on Wednesday at the Homer Farmers Market.

The market hosted three Kids’ Vending Days this year, one each in June, July and August, for the purpose of “engaging youth in agricultural and entrepreneurial activities and education, while developing social and math skills,” per their website. Staff said there were nine kids’ booths at the market on Wednesday. Several of the vendors said it was their first time selling at the market.

Merchandise available for sale ranged from baked goods and lemonade to fine arts and handicrafts. Presley-Riven Willden and Mailea Willden, working the “Riven’s Relics” booth, sold painted rocks, clay sculptures and jewelry. Avery Rennolds sold snapdragon stems in four colors, which she’d grown in her family’s high tunnel, for a dollar each. She said she felt “really good” about her sales so far, shortly after the market opened Wednesday afternoon.

Siblings Elsa and Keel Kaufman sold a variety of handicrafts at the booth rented by their parents, Willow Q. Jones and David Kaufmann. Alongside Jones’ handmade brooms and carvings and Kaufmann’s pottery, both kids sold their own pottery pieces. Elsa also sold several beaded crowns and ornaments, while Keel sold handmade bookmarks, cards and drawings.

Rosie Mahowald, sharing a booth with her brother, sold colorful coconut-based glycerin soaps she’d cast in molds.

The Homer Farmers Market is open Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more at homerfarmersmarket.org/ or find the market on Facebook.
