BEST NIGHT WITH BILL NYE BET: Kachemak Bay Campus will host a free livestream of a moderated discussion, brought to you by UAA’s College of Arts and Sciences, Alaska Public Media, 49 Writers and the Anchorage Museum, with Bill Nye on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. in Pioneer Hall. Best known for his Emmy-winning run as “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” Bill Nye brings his love of science and flair for comedy to every appearance, deftly translating complex issues to help inspire audiences of all ages to engage with and improve our world. In this discussion, Nye will address a variety of topics, including space and planetary science, climate change, environmental issues, current events in science, and his extensive background in television and education, and will share a relevant and inspiring message for people to be good stewards of our planet and science-engaged in today’s world. BEST LIVE MUSIC BET: The Mermaid Cafe, located inside the Old Inlet Bookshop on Main Street, will host Louisiana/Chicago-based alt-folk music group Hemlock, joined by Midwest Gothic rock artist Chaepter, for a live performance on Friday, Aug. 22 from 5-7 p.m. The two artists are currently on their Alaska tour, and will be visiting Seward, Girdwood, Anchorage, Wasilla, Fairbanks, Talkeetna and Hope through the rest of August. BEST ALUMNI VOLLEYBALL GAME BET: Join Homer High School Lady Mariner volleyball for an alumni game and dessert auction fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 6-8 p.m. in the HHS gym. Take part in or watch the epic showdown as the Lady Mariners face off against alumni players in a fierce battle for bragging rights and the prestigious Legacy Cup 2025. BEST COMMUNITY FUN RUN/WALK BET: Kachemak Bay Recovery Connection will host their third annual 5K Fun Walk/Run on Saturday, Aug. 30. All strollers, walkers and runners are welcome. The race will begin at the Deep Water Dock on the Homer Spit. Walkers start at 10:30 a.m. and runners start at 11 a.m. Pre-register online at kbayrecovery.org before Aug. 29 for a discounted rate. Registration will also be available at the Deep Water Dock from 9-10:15 a.m. on the day of the run. This event is free to anyone that wants to join and cannot afford it — just show up! Borough Mayor Peter Micciche will serve as race start official and emcee. The community and run participants are encouraged to meet at the Deep Water Dock after the race, starting at 11:30 a.m., for prizes, a social, snacks and music by Cody Burch.
