Best Bets

This week is just full of good causes! Whether you want to donate or enjoy your time, or both, for further details, check out these Best Bets.

BEST SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL VET BET: On Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 27, a cupcake fundraiser will be held in Anchor Point by the drive-through coffee shop, Rise N’ Grind, to raise money for Dr. Claudio Lagoa of Chugach Animal Clinic, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer. Funds raised from the cupcake sales will go towards supporting him and his family through this difficult time. A raffle will also be held, with tickets available for purchase through Saturday. For those interested in donating directly, a GoFundMe page can be found on Chugach Animal Clinic’s Facebook page. Rise N’ Grind, 34115 Sterling Highway.

BEST PLAY IT FORWARD BET: South Peninsula Behavioral Health Services is hosting the “Play It Forward” concert on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Alice’s Champagne Palace starting at 8 p.m. This event, also in honor of SPBHS’s 46th anniversary, brings together three bands for an evening of live music, community and hope, and will raise funds to transform the Center’s Annex into a Teen Community Resource Center. Come see performances by singer-songwriter Madelynn Moore, the Tune Weavers, and the Homer debut of the Loathsome Doves, and help SPBHS create a supportive environment where teens can find support, connection and opportunity. General admission is $15; tickets can be purchased at www.spbhs.org/tickets. Donations can also be made through the SPBHS website; for additional sponsorship opportunities or more information, contact Ashley Moore at amoore@spbhs.org. Alice’s Champagne Palace, 195 E. Pioneer Ave.

BEST FREE DOG VACCINE DRIVE BET: Homer Animal Friends and Homer Animal Shelter will be collaborating to host a free dog vaccination drive on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 1-3 p.m. Dogs must be healthy and leashed at the time of vaccination. Any digital or print records of previous vaccinations should be brought along. The drive is in honor of World Rabies Day, and both rabies and parvovirus-distemper vaccines will be available. Homer Animal Shelter, 3577 Heath St.

BEST FOOD PANTRY FUNDRAISER BET: The Anchor Point Food Pantry is thrilled to invite the public to a Frontier Days fundraiser event — where good food, good company and a good cause come together — on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 3-7 p.m. at the VFW Post 10221. Every year, the pantry serves over 6,000 meals and provides grocery bags to families across Anchor Point and beyond, from Ninilchik to Homer. APFP also offers free summer lunches and school-time weekend meal packs for students. Join pantry volunteers and your neighbors at the Frontier Days event for hayrides, a petting zoo, games, a dessert auction, silent auction, plenty of neighborly cheer — and of course, a good, hearty meal. Suggested donation is $10 per person or $20 per family. If that’s a stretch, come anyway — though pantry volunteers might hand you a ladle or a tray! A matching grant is available to double attendees’ generosity towards the food pantry, and a $50 gift certificate for Fat Olives will be given out as a door prize. If you want to lend a hand or donate a dessert for the auction or the Frontier Days meal, the pantry welcomes all willing support and assistance and will find a place for you. Find more information, including a donation link, on the Anchor Point Food Pantry Facebook page. VFW Post 10221, 72551 Milo Fritz Ave.
